I work in healthcare. And though I love to take care of my patients and my teammates, it doesn’t always come naturally to me to care for myself. Maybe you can relate?
If you’re working in a service or caregiving role, you’re likely feeling the weight of the last three years. The many demands and constraints of the COVID-19 pandemic have created an epidemic of physical exhaustion, anxiety, depression, and feelings of burnout for many of us.
Walking in nature is one way I restore balance to my body and a sense of wellbeing to my soul. Healthy movement, fresh air, and applied curiosity— this combination is my favorite way to recharge. I always come home feeling inspired by my new discoveries along the trail.
Here in North Carolina, the wild Redbud trees have literally burst into bloom.
Notice the way the flowers are able to sprout directly from the bark of the trunk and branches. It’s something that brings magic and delight to my day when I see it. I have the luxury of a few unhurried minutes to try and make a photo that captures the gratitude and awe I feel in the presence of such beauty. Later at home, maybe I’ll do a bit of painting my sketchbook to enjoy this gorgeous saturated color palette: crimson, charcoal, and green.
The peacefulness and satisfaction of this walk will remain with me long after it’s done. It is a boost of joyful calm that I can keep. I’ll carry the memories with me into my clinical work this week— like a touchstone in my pocket.
It’s portable. Simple. Free.
And it’s available to those who will take a few minutes to ask: What does this day have to show me?
Here’s a song by the talented Mark Knopfler about a Redbud tree. Ah, so lovely…
