What happens when you find an idea that is so irresistable— so prismatic— that you never get tired of seeing it in new ways?
Where did this idea come from?
That’s the odd thing— you probably can’t remember.
It doesn’t matter. Your mind is in love.
This love is built from a million little specks of creative dust that finally become something visible and solid. It’s like something musical that your mind wants to dance round and round with.
When you love an idea, it’s really fun to think about it on different scales.
This is how I feel about living in the microseasons.
Since the current season here is cool and rainy, I decided to stay indoors and geek out with some of the new Canva design tools. Here’s what I came up with when I reimagined a photo of an orange mushroom that I took back in 2015 using my iPod Touch. (Hahaha! Yes, I am a dinosaur.)
Imagine a Maximalist Version
Some say the Minimalistic look of graphic design is on the way out. Maximalism is coming more and more into style these days.
Hmmmmm…
What if an enormous Godzilla-mushroom suddenly appeared in Times Square?
This style is great for letting your imagination run wild! Canva’s “Magic Edit” tool is in Beta testing right now— very simple to use. It offered us four different images to choose from each time we gave it a prompt.
Imagine Your Idea in the Most Ordinary Way
Is there a utilitarian version of your idea?
This tote can come with me to the grocery store— and the library. These and other versions that I made would also serve as useful gift bags at holiday time.
Imagine It Opulently
Just for fun, I would love to see a certain famous NYC jewelry store create a magical, mossy, forest-themed window display on 5th Avenue! I imagine jewels nestled in layers of moss and mushrooms and wildflowers. Maybe a Luna moth will appear on the scene, too. Is there an extravagant version of your idea? What would that look like?
Imagine Your Idea Made Humble and Useful
I have to say, this one was my favorite version. It would make me so happy to have a book of postage stamps like this. It used to be possible, but I’m not sure it’s still allowed by the US Postal Service.
These were my rainy day amusements. I hope you’re also having a blast with whatever you’re creating this season. Don’t hesitate to try and learn something new.
I love the way you describe being obsessed with an idea!
